What Is A GPS?

The GPS (global positioning system) is a system developed by the U.S department of defence. It was originally intended for military use only, however, in the 1980's, it was released for civilian use.

Basically, the GPS communicates with a system of 24 satellites orbiting the earth. By sending and recieving signals from these satellites, a GPS system is able to calculate its exact position (longitude and latitude), speed, direction and time.

Today, modern technology has refined the GPS and vastly increased their perfomance. A GPS device can prove to be extremly handy in many situations, whether it be simply finding a location while driving on the roads (Some GPS systems have a voice of their own, and will direct the user via voice commands and/or map representation to his/her destination), travelling through a bush, travelling out at sea, or even just participating in recreational activities.
